Become a Canadian - Canada national day

Following the musical performances by Montreal artist Marie-Mai and Bedouin Soundclash, the celebrants turned their attention to the sky. Over 40 jets, airplanes and helicopters flew over Parliament Hill and traveled along the Ottawa River toward the main stage, where the audience watched the “sky parade” on Canada Day.

The two commanders on stage explained that the aircraft represented the Royal Canadian Air Force’s past, present, and future, from World War II-era planes to modern Cyclone and Chinook helicopters.

The big finale was the thunderous roar of two F-35 fighters, flying overhead at around 650 kilometers per hour.

Canada has signed a contract to purchase 88 of these aircraft worth $19 billion, but the first one will not be delivered until 2026. The two F-35 jets at the Canada Day celebration were piloted by the Vermont Air National Guard.

For one attendee and his young son, it was the highlight of the day.

“I’m proud to be Canadian, and also Québécois,” he declared, having arrived from Valcourt, Quebec. “I love what Canada represents: kindness, openness.”

Meanwhile, at Toronto’s Thomson Memorial Park, children played on inflatable castles and families had picnics.

“Honestly, (Canada Day) didn’t mean much to me until I had my own family, and now it’s much more important,” one celebrant explained, noting that he has participated in the Toronto festivities during the last 5-6 years. “I’m very lucky to travel around the world. I’ve seen other places and Canada is a great place to live.”

In the afternoon, many participants took refuge from the heat near the Ottawa River, which was full of various types of small boats, or in the shade of the trees.

The celebrations in Ottawa ended with a spectacular fireworks show at LeBreton Flats Park late in the evening.
