The rankings tend to provide essential information to help students choose the university that best suits their needs.

The rankings use 12 major performance indicators to grade universities. Some of these indicators include the following:

  • Faculty Awards
  • Operating Budgets
  • Scholarships and Bursaries
  • Total Research (Dollars)
  • Library Acquisitions

Become A Canadian also establishes that Maclean’s categorizes universities into three groups: primary undergraduate universities, comprehensive universities, and medical doctoral universities, using indicators such as:

  • Levels of research funding
  • Diversity of offerings
  • Breadth and depth of graduate and professional programs

Top 10 universities in Canada in 2024

Become A Canadian highlights the top universities according to Maclean’s:

1. Simon Fraser University comes first on the list

2. The University of Victoria is second on the list

3. The University of Waterloo is third on the list

4. York University is third on the list

5-6. Carleton University and the University of Guelph tied for the fifth position

7. Memorial University comes seventh

8. The University of New Brunswick comes eighth

9. Concordia University comes ninth

10. Toronto Metropolitan University comes tenth

The overall score of these school rankings is calculated based on different metrics, which carry varying percentages. For instance, the success of students at winning national academic awards is weighted, and this alone accounts for 20 per cent of the final score. Furthermore, the number of available resources in a school accounts for 22 per cent of the overall score.
